Wireless repeater pings the master access point, but doesn't have internet?

I have been struggling today with a couple of wireless routers that I have. One is connected to the Internet (cbn CH7466CE Wireless Voice Gateway), and I would like to have the other one serving as a repeater (TP-Link TL-WR841N). I set the TP-Link as a repeater using the settings specified in its manual. I have also specified the master router's IP as the gateway for the repeater. Now, I can ping the main router from the repeater, but not able to ping any valid IP on the internet, like 8.8.8.8.

Any idea? Do I need to do something on the master router?

Many thanks!

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish. The device you have unless you have the wrong part number can not run as a wireless repeater. Then again the term "repeater" is used incorrectly by a lot of people.

The second router will not have any ip addresses other than maybe a management IP.

Still it really depends what you are trying to do. If you have connected it to the main router with a ethernet cable you want it to run as a AP. I can find no options that allow it to run as a actual wireless repeater or even a client-bridge device.

Howdy,

Depending on how your network is set up, (most home wifi is set up as a flat layer-2 network) you shouldn't care about IP or gateways.

I would suggest running a traceroute from either your pc connected to the repeater, or the repeater itself to 8.8.8.8

Should show you where your traffic is going.

Hey,

Traceroute to 8.8.8.8 from the repeater returns 'request timeout', from a pc connected to repeater returns 'destination host unreachable'.
I also tried traceroute to the main router from the pc connected to the repeater and it returns 'request timeout'. Does the difference mean something?
