Hi

My PC is running games fine but I've been playing with the idea of getting a new CPU, I know that Gaming performance is more about the GPU than the CPU but I was wondering if you guys think ill see a decent performance boost
from an upgrade from my AMD FX 8320 to a Core I5 7500 or I7 7700 keeping in mind that ill be running the same GTX 970 4GB

P.S Only running games at 1080p not bothered about 4K

Solution
CPU intensive titles, a 7500 will show some gains vs the 8320. The 7700 would be wasted at 1080p (at 4K, the HT seems to help in some titles).

Honestly though, you're not going to see wholesale gains by upgrading the CPU - especially not proportionate to the cost of a new CPU/Mobo/RAM, when paired with a 970....... that is, unless you only play really CPU intensive titles*.

If anything, OC the 8320 for a bit of a boost. Not going to be as fast as a 7500, but it'll close the gap a little.

*Even if you only play CPU intensive titles, consider the cost to upgrade. Are you seeing decent FPS, on reasonable settings? If so, there's likely not much a justification for the ~$500 investment in a new CPU/Mobo/RAM.... at least, not just...

The only way it would matter is if the games you were playing were more CPU dependent over GPU dependent. But your overall everyday speed would be noticeable with changing from an FX to Kabylake. If you are an AMD fanboy, you could wait for the new Ryzen by AMD to drop here next month (maybe) and see what the reviews say about them before you buy, but if you are set on Intel, buy Kabylake with a 200 series mobo.

The best performance upgrade is the GPU. The 970 is old, 3,5+0.5GB, low performance at DX12.
The Intel setup performs better at 1080p, but you will spend too much money for the small gain.
If I were you, I will OC the FX 8320 at 8350/8370 level and change GPU (GTX1060 6gb , RX480 8 gb or better), or buy another 970 and get a SLI.
Or you could wait a few weeks for Ryzen's benchmarks and then make a choice.
