Can I use 2 different types of graphic card in the same machine?

I currently have a MSI R9 270x twin froze edition I wanted to add another one but a slightly better one as I have started mining crypto currency. I wanted to add a MSI R9 280x but I wanted to know if it would work when I installed it?

You can use 1 card for 1 task and another card for another (and have monitors connected to both).
What you can not do is have an extended display across monitors connected to the different cards, nor can you crossfire them or combine processing power in any way.
