Hypothetical question on a RAM working at a lower capacity than specified on the stick

Good day everyone,

Is it possible for a fully functional RAM with no error, for example an 8GB RAM that is slotted in a memory slot with an 8GB capacity, to work but at a lower capacity of say 6 or 4GB only?

Or is it a case of the RAM stick either working at its full capacity or not at all?

Thanks.

Edit.

Assuming also that the system is using a separate video card.

Thanks CTLM and drkatz for replying.

Yes, I'm referring at the hardware level. I guess, my question wasn't that clear. Is it possible that only a part of the memory stick is working such that it's only working with half or whatever amount is available compared to the full stated amount?

Okay. No goal. Was just curious if it was possible for the memory stick to continue working, but at a lower capacity. Thanks again for clearing that up.
