I'm new to the community, I found this site by googling for an answer to a question I have about my current workstation configuration. I'm a design engineer by trade and current IT person by default. I recently built a new workstation which has the following components:

  • MB = ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO (BIOS = AMI 3103 03/09/2016)
    Processor = Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz, Cores 4, Threads 8
    RAM = 32 GB Corsair PC3-10700(667 MHz) (CMY16GX3M2A1866C9)
    GPU = NVIDIA Quadro M4000 8GB GDDR5
    PSU = 750W Corsair
    Monitors = (4X) Samsung U28E590D 28" UHD 4K
    HDD = Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64 OEM. We use Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 for Modeling.

I do not believe the graphics card can handle 4 of these 4K Monitors at 3840 x 2160 resolution. I only had two plugged in at 1st and the card worked fine at the max resolution of 3480 x 2160, but when I added two more. the 1st two monitors dropped down to 2560 x1440 and the two new max out at 1920 x 1080. I need too have all 4 monitors at 3840 x 2160. What are my options? Should I buy a second Quadro M4000 or is there a card that can handle 4 of these big monitors at 3840 x 2160.

Solution
From other threads I've looked at, the information present would suggest that you can SLI another M4000 card so that you can reach the resolution that you wish to work with.

@Night Owl: I ordered a second M4000 card on Friday. It is supposed to be delivered here today. Once I get it installed and see that it works. Which I'm sure this will fix my issue, I will post your response as the answer. Thanks!

Ok, so I had some issues with the second card I thought. When I 1st received Monitors 1 and 2 I plugged them into my computer with the cables that came with the monitors they were 6ft each and not long enough to reach the computer so I put my computer on the bench to try out the monitors. The resolution on both was 3840 x 2160. So I ordered 2 more monitors and 4 15 ft cables. After these was installed I noticed that the resolution on all four was not right. Monitors 1 and 2 was at 2560 x 1440 and Monitors 3 and four was at 1920 x 1080. At this point, I was confused and found this website. I needed to ask the graphics card professionals what I did wrong. Turns out I needed a second video card because the Single Quadro M4000 did not have enough muscle to push that high resolution to 4 monitors. I spent the extra $900, bought the second Quadro M4000 and plugged it into the appropriate PCIe slot and used a different power circuit from the power supply than the 1st card used. I also used an SLI cable that came with the motherboard (made by NVidia).

I turned the power on and then the resolution on monitors 1 and 2 was at 1600x900 and monitors 3 and 4 were at 1920 x1080. I was lost. Went home had a few beers and tried to contemplate why my resolution was not right. I needed to have 3840 x2160 on each monitor and these cards did not want to cooperate. Then to top it off one of my monitors started showing signs of instability it started flickering and showed static with the wallpaper. What the heck? So I moved the cables around and plugged them into every configuration possible. still the same. then I thought maybe unplug power to the twitchy one. I did and the flickering moved to a different monitor. HUH?

I spent 4 hours talking to NVidia support and we tried everything under the sun and then they gave up and said it was a faulty card. I even tossed the SLI cable as iI found that this was not necessary for what i was trying to accomplish. At this point, I went home for the evening and slipped into madness.

The next day I awoke determined to figure this issue. I went back to basics and tried just one card, this did not help now my single card on two monitors did not give me my target resolution. then a light clicked on, the heavens opened up and angels sang. I put the workstation back on the bench and removed all 4 of the pretty new 15 ft cables and grabbed all four of the 6ft cables that came with the monitor to see if maybe it was the cables....DING DING DING, we have a winner all four screens now have 3840 x 2160. Pure joy swept over me and a tear rolled down my cheek.

Got on the web and ordered 4 new 15 ft cables from a brand I know is good. Those arrive tomorrow and hopefully, I can relocate my workstation back under the desk where it belongs.

I'm awarding the solution to LucaFire for his help he pointed me in the right direction to get me to a working solution. Your valuable time is greatly appreciated.

I must also thank you for, in the end, finding the solution yourself - even if it did come at a price which could have been reduced.

I will of course use this experience to better help me support other members of the community with more accurate information!
I must thank you profusely for helping my further my tech understanding! Good luck with all future plans :)

Update: I received the new 15ft cables(Cables Matter Brand) and they worked without issue. The other brand that failed was UGreen. Even tho they are advertised as 4K capable they, in fact, are not. Hope this helps someone avoid the same scenario.
