putting a 2*6 pin pcie to a 8 pin slot

So I had this gpu now for quite awhile (hd 5850) which is pretty old and am now considering to buy a new gpu (rx 470). I want to buy the xfx rx 470 dual fan triple x edition (either that or HIS Ice qx2).

I was searching online to find one and then I found the Sapphire Rx 470 Nitro + oc which need an 8pin pcie (unlike the xfx,his,power color red dragon that uses 6pin) which I find very cool. but since I am using the hd 5850 which requires a 2*6 pin, that's all I have. no 6+2 or 8 pin pcie.

my question is. Can I put a 2*6 pin in a 8pin and leave the other 4 just laying outside. or should I just buy the version which only needs a 6pin.

I admit, I don't know what you mean by 6*2. Is it a 12pin with 2 sets of 2 pins. Sapphire makes such a high quality card, I have a 380 Nitro and am very happy with it. You can get an adapter from Molex to 8 pin.

The motherboard provides up to 75 watts through the PCIe x 16 slot. A 6 pin PCIe plug is rated up to 75 watts, and an 8 pin PCIe is rated up to 150 watts. PSUs with 6+2 pins connectors are rated up to 150 watts.

It seems your power supply doesn't meet requirements to run a card that needs a 150 watt PCIe cable.

Can you put a 2*6 pin in a 8pin and leave the other 4 just laying outside? That sounds like a good way to short circuit the system and cause a fire.

You can get a 2x6 pin adapter to an 8-pin, but it's only recommended in case of an older-but-decent-quality power supply that just doesn't have the connectors -- it happens occasionally -- and for that, we'd need to know exactly what PSU you're talking about.

Usually the GPU will come with the dual 6 pin to 8 pin adapter. If not let me know and I think I have one I will send you after you get your new card.

At least in my experience buying RX GPU's, all 4 that I got came without much else than the card and drivers and a manual (1 sapphire, 2 XFX, 1 MSI)

Hmm every card I ever purchased came with them, but it has been a while since I have purchased an ATI card. Last was a hd 5870. I think I have one laying around from my latest Nvidia purchase and if I do and I'll does not get one with his GPU purchase and needs one, it's his.

Thats not right. If your psu has multiple 6 pin pcie plugs but not a 8 pin or 6-2 pin pci e plugs does not mean you can not run a 8 pin card. You just need the adapter. Thats why most cards come with the adapter. You will not short anything out if you use the adapter.

Chef7734 is absolutely right here but maxalge gave the correct solution above. He said get the 2x6pin to 8pin adapter or alternately get the 6pin version of the card. OP should chose maxalge's post as solution.
