Hi. I have a 250gb seagate external hard drive when I plug it into usb port nothing shows up on my laptop but yet the HD is making noises. All usb ports are working but yet nothing is showing for HD on my laptop. How can I fix this an retrieve my data?

Hey there, Paula.

I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different computer and a different USB cable if possible, to see if the same thing happens again. I'd also ask if you could post screenshots of what you see in Disk Management and Device Manager while you have the HDD connected to the laptop. Here's how to open them: How to access Disk Management in Windows and How to access Device Manager in Windows.

If you have no luck with the drive being recognized, I'd suggest that you try accessing it via Ubuntu Live USB, to see if you'd be able to get to your data. Another option would be data recovery software: https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893.

Please let me know how everything goes...

Hi Paula,
When you say noises is it something along this type of hard drive clicking sound?
If yes, then it is not a simple matter and I can lay out what you can do to get your data back and fix the drive temporarily for that matter.

If this is different noise, then you can try or should, plug your drive in another computer. Use Mac if you were on Windows and vice versa...it can be enough.

Also you can get the drive outside its usb box and plus it directly to a computer motherboard. Let me know if you understand what I am saying here.
