Hi, my problem is that the wired Ethernet connection that I need to use for games at university sometimes when plugged in to my computer, changes between being undetected and detected every 5 seconds or so sometimes (This shows up as ethernet enabled and unidentified network in network connections on control panel). I have tried both using the laptop's ethernet port and a USB to Ethernet adaptor for the connection but the same problem comes up for both. For the USB adaptor, my laptop 100% recognises something is plugged into the USB slot, but the Ethernet connection still flickers from connected and disconnected. I am not sure how to fix the problem. When I go in Windows Diagnosis for the Ethernet connection, it says that I don't have a valid IP configuration. in addition to this, in ipconfig when the cable is plugged in, shows this for the connection:

Ethernet adapter Ethernet 3:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : ASIX AX88772 USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0E-C6-CC-DA-21
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 128.240.235.119
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 128.240.235.66

Thanks for any help :)

Maybe this only comes to mind for me because I have patch cables easily available to me and if not, I can make another, but have you tried a different CAT5 cable?

I've seen too many cables both pre-made and custom cables stop working properly. Some of the premade cables use flimsy soft plastic in the connectors that damages easily.

Edit: And custom ones if not terminated properly can come loose, losing consistent connection between wires and the RJ-45 connector.

Normally, to troubleshoot first thing I check is the cable, if changing the cable does not fix it, then I check the ports both wall and device. Since it did even when using the USB adapter, that rules out your laptops Ethernet port. Leaving the cable or the wall jack.

Hi cliffro,

I have tried two different cables and both seem to have the same problem, so It's probably to do with the port in the wall. If that's the problem then I'll try and call in the staff to take a look at it to see if they know what's wrong.
