I recently just bought some new RAM for my laptop, but I'm having some problems.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5010.
I'm trying to install 2x4gb DDR3 1600MHz sticks.
But I keep getting a fuzzy screen and a crash when I install both; or a BSOD when I install just one.

I ran a Crucial system scan, and apparently my new RAM sticks (although not crucial branded) should be compatable.

I tried both sticks, and swapped over the slots, but still had no luck.

Still having a BSOD when using one, and a fuzzy screen followed by a crash when using two.

Try putting back your old ram, do you get any errors? If not you should put back again your new RAMs and open bios , maybe the settings are set for your old laptop's ram specifications (things like voltage , dual channel enabled and stuff like this )

If I put in the old RAM, it works perfectly.

I don't have many options in my BIOS, but with the new RAM in, I can see that it display the correct size, but shows the old RAM speed.

Hmm that sounds bad, sorry for asking again , are you sure there isnt any advanced settings there? If not , i think you should try updating your bios with your old ram and then try again with the new

What version of windows do you have? Is it x32 or x64? if it is x32 you can expand your RAM capacity over 4gb .
If you tried to plug in only one ram (new one) in the old ram's slot and it failed sounds like a problem .
There is something called dell diagnostics or memtest, i never tried that , but its running pre-OS and checking your problem

If it helps, I've realised that my old RAM was PC3-10600, whereas my new RAM is PC3-12800.

I don't know whether that might cause a problem?
