Guys i have an old psu(300w) and i bought a new video card(hd7850) pcie3 ddr5 while my mobo is a pcie1. Im asking if it would consume less power since its on pcie1 and would not reach the video cards full potential.

Still short on a new psu

Solution
the power supply won't blow up cause it won't run the card. most of those use 2 x 6-pin power connections from the psu which you will not have on your 300w unit.

so the card won't even power on without that extra power it needs. you need a new psu for that card or a different card for that psu. one or the other cause it won't work as is.

What CPU are you using? 300W "might" be able to handle your 7850 although barely.

there is NO CHANCE the psu will handle the card. reference design is 2 x 6-pin power and 225w power usage!! custom cards are more than that.

please do not suggest that a 300w unit can handle a 225w+ gpu plus the rest of the system. it won't have the power leads needed nor would it be able to run the card through anything short of magic. option is to replace the psu or replace the card but not even for 1 second is there any hope of being able to run the card with that psu.

Depends on the CPU tbh, although if the 300W PSU has cables to supply the card I don't see where the issue is. Ofc to be on the safe side I'd recommend at least a 500W PSU. But hell, my memory on the ol' 7850 is a bit hazy but just because a card requires 2 x 6 pin power doesn't necessarily mean it is going to use up the max 225W.

Pretty sure we can agree that the PSU will hardly power the system though XD

if you need any help picking a power supply, i can help there as well :)

just need the pc specs and a budget and can easily pick a good choice. quality does not mean expensive but won't be the bottom end of pricing either. a 500w psu for $20 is pretty much junk but a good one can be had for $35-40 on sale most of the time.
