I have the opportunity to get my hands on all the components I need for free, with the motherboard being an Asus P5E-VM DO. I want to upgrade the CPU to a Xeon x5470 (because of its overclocking potential), and have been doing a fair amount of research on the topic of LGA775 to 771 mod support on this motherboard. However, there seems to be a bit of confliction in the various message boards. Some threads say that the Q35 chipset impedes the ability of the motherboard to use the x5000 series CPUs, but other sites say this issue happens on boards made by other brands.

My question(s):
1: Is there a way to get the x5470 to work on this motherboard?
2: If not, what motherboard should I buy?
3: On a different note, what GPU would you recommend? I am thinking of an R9 290x, but would like other opinions.

I cannot speak for 771 to 775 conversions and I would not trust them. they say it makes the Xenon processor a Qxxxx processor like a Q9xxx, if it is true one would think it will run no better than the Q9xxx series cpu on that board.

the x5470 CPU is supported by the following list of motherboards : http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Xeon/X5470_motherboards.html

R9 290x is a decent video card, what is the purpose of the system ?

Since the parts are free (except for the CPU I want to upgrade to and GPU), I intend to use this mostly as a test system to get used to and more knowledgeable about overclocking. This is the first personal desktop that I can tinker with and tweak, since I am used to the pre-built "family" computer. If I could get one and a half years of life out of this build it would be worth it.
However, I still want to game so I picked the 290x because I have found a few videos and forums where people paired it with the Xeon x5470 overclocked to 4GHz and seeing 1080 high at 60+ fps. That and I can buy this card off a friend who just upgraded his whole rig.
