Hey guys,

I am currently booting from an m.2 SSD which has Windows 10 installed via a usb. I got a blue screen crash last week and now i suspect windows has somehow been corrupted. I want to format the drive and reinstall windows.

The issue is when i have the m.2 installed my system freezes on the startup/splash screen and i cannot access the bios. With the m.2 removed i can access the bios as usual. I have the windows installation usb plugged in but i cant figure out how to make the computer boot from it. With the m.2 installed the computer boots from it rather than the usb but because i cant access the bios with the m.2 installed to change the boot priority. With the m.2 uninstalled i made it so the usb was the first boot priority but this must change as soon as the m.2 is installed.

I played around with the motherboard settings and got it to boot from the windows 10 usb with the m.2 installed before (before i was going to format the drive) but I cant remember the settings i used.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-AR

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming you're using the Windows Media Tool USB flash drive containing the Win 10 setup files...
Have you tried accessing the ASUS boot menu during bootup using the F8 key and selecting the USB flash drive as the boot device? Hopefully that should take you to the Win 10 setup process.

Yes i am using the usb with Win 10 setup files. Yes i have tried that, as soon as it boots with the m.2 installed i have no control and no functions work, it just freezes on the splash screen even if i spam F8 as soon as i hit the power button.

Ordinarily when you power-up the PC you do not "spam" (press?) the F8 key (the key usually used on ASUS motherboards) to access the boot menu. You generally have to wait a few moments before the screen display indicates various key combinations.

But are you indicating that when you press the PC's power button the screen instantaneously freezes or the screen freezes within a moment or two with the ASUS logo?

Alternatively, can you power-on the PC, immediately tapping the Del key to see if you can enter the BIOS and check the BIOS settings to ensure all is correct there?

Ah yes i understand. Yes i do press delete or F2 in the case of my motherboard, to access my bios normally but with the m.2 installed i cannot as it freezes before i am able to access it even if i immediately start tapping DEL/F2 when i power on the computer.

I just tried connecting my case reset switch to the DRCT 2pin plug but it still gets stuck on the splash screen/motherboard screen and the boot_device_led is still on with the m.2 installed.

I have also changed my bios boot override settings so that the Win10 bootable usb is priority 1 and it still freezes.
