so my friend bought a used gaming pc not long ago consisting of an i5 3450 , msi Z77A-G45 and a gtx 670 and he has a 750w psu and windows 10. He wants to buy a new gpu for his system so i lined up 2 options buy either gtx 970 used for around 134,58 dollars or get the evga gtx 1060 3gb graphics card for around 235,52 dollars but he only got around 246,74 dollars to spend on upgrading his pc so what should he go for?

last time I checked, the average difference between RX 480 and GTX 1060 (with the latest drivers) was next to none. Far from 12% on release. It is a shame that it took AMD over 6 month to get their drivers right, but we are now, so who cares as long as it works.
In real world it translates to 1-2 FPS which is really unnoticeable. And of course there are some games that clearly prefer the AMD HW (and vice versa). but we care about avg more.
Unlike GTX 1060 3GB, the RX480 4GB is fully enabled version and the difference is really just the amount of vRAM.
For 1080p gaming, there is 0 performance benefit of over 4GB vram. and frankly, those cards are not meant for higher resolution.
So the RATIONAL choice is getting RX 480 4GB as it is...

benchmarks i watched proved otherwise that the gtx 1060 3gb was better then rx 480 but maybe he should go for this ? EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING - 6GB for around 325,13 dollars but the question is if it really is worth it if he can get the gtx 970 for 145,80 dollars what do you think ? :)

IMHO, the choice between RX 480 8GB, RX 480 4GB and GTX 1060 6GB is very clear if the pricing is right. The GTX 1060 3GB is slower and cost the same or higher than RX 480 4GB. makes 3GB irrelevant.
Right now, the rational buyer list is:
1050 - for low budget.
1050Ti - only low profile version for small form factor.
RX 470 4GB
RX 480 4GB
GTX 1070
GTX 1080

For the price where he's trying to be around it works, with the cooler to be honest it's not that bad. I had it for a week before returning it for MSI ek x 1070 gtx. Temps were not that bad on that mini 1060 gtx. Maybe since i have great airflow in my case could have caused it to run cool,i was putting it under full load as well. So dont dog on the cooler unless you have owned it, with the right case and set up it works pretty well for the price.
