Sandy bridge upgrade question

Solution
Well, recommendation still applies.

Baring a very cheap motherboard that can't handle the 77W TDP of an i7-3770 or i7-3770k all it should take is a BIOS update with your i5 to take care of compatibility.

It will come in handy with some of the latest games, as they are being built to handle more CPU cores/threads.

Up to if you want to do it.

Depends on what you do with it, but you could likely also put in an Ivy Bridge i7 if you wanted to stretch that board a tiny bit farther.

If you are gaming then the IPC on single threads between an i5 and i7 are very similar. Most games will play roughly the same between the two. If you are doing other tasks such as streaming, video editing, graphics work, encoding, etc, then there would be an advantage towards the i7s.

Probably not going to be a huge difference in performance for most things. I would save up for a newer cpu ram and mb and get a few bucks for your old one from someone who needs to upgrade their old potato rig. Just my 2 cents.
