The 2 routers I currently support are Edgemarc 4700 & Simplewan Advanced Unit. The only 2 VPN options I see available are PPTP & IPSec. My boss wants me to find away to stop using PPTP to access our networks because it has known security risks and has become obsoulete. Is there a way to access our remote networks through IPSec? The Simplewan device that we use has IPSec options to create a Dynamic VPN Server & IPSec Key in addition to creating a standard site to site tunnel. Im not sure how to create a connection to a router/network that will get me in quickly and be as efficient as PPTP. I see on my windows client tool when creating a PPTP login there are other types of connections but Im not sure how to interface with IPSec from my laptop like I can with PPTP. Any help is appreciated.

There really is not a lot of difference between pptp and ipsec in how it runs. Most the problem is with all the options IPSEC has. There are a number of free vpn clients that support IPSEC. IPSEC is pretty standard so you should be able to run any client with any server. The key things that IPSEC does not like is NAT. You must be sure you have set your server accept NATT based sessions and likely you will have to configure it to accept traffic from random ip unless you know all your ips.

The clients do not take much you match the settings for things like SHA,DES,AES etc etc. You put in your preshared key and it should just connect.
