Hi all. This is a new PC, ASUS ROG g20cb desktop with I7 and geforce 1070, 410w, 16gb ram.

The problem started happening after this:

A couple of days ago, I decided to play Rome 2: total war on my big ol' smart tv. No problem. After playing a multiplayer campaign with my friend, I plugged the pc back into the 27" curved samsung monitor it was originally plugged to. At first, the monitor did not detect the PC, despite it running normally. Sounds were emanating from the speakers as they should have.

Frustrated, nothing seemed to help. I plugged the pc back into the TV to see if I fried my gpu somehow. Worked fine.

Plugged back into monitor, eureka, it worked.

Everything seemed just dandy.

but...

pretty much every game now (R2:TW, Elder scrolls online, banished, Homeworld Remastered, Elite: Dangerous, ARK, Crusader Kings, XCOM 2, Cities: Skylines, etc etc etc) except for the Witcher 3 (Polish engineering, go figure :p ) end up crashing, soon after being booted up, in a similar way: The screen goes black, then goes into a deeper black, my monitor displays an HDMI icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen, and it flashes back into the lighter black, with windows fully functioning. The game is still running, be it in fullscreen or windowed mode, but the display is totally black. The mouse cursor, depending on game, remains the same. It changes based on its location, too, so it's detecting the games' interfaces. IDK what happened, how to fix.

I have recently installed bitdefender av 2017 (paid version) and comodo firewall (free version). Unknown if related, tried disabling in various combinations to no avail.

Intuition hints that it might have something to do with the HDMI port, from switching from my monitor to my Vizio TV. I tried fiddling with the NVIDIA control panel, but i didn't really have a clue what I was doing, and anything I changed had no effect on the issue, other than altering my resolution. Settings are presently returned to default.

Also, yes, I bought a pre-built gaming PC. Sue me. I had some disposable income and didn't feel like searching for parts and compatibility and stuff. Very happy with the PC, even now.

THINGS I'VE TRIED (TLDR):
Hard & soft resets. File integrity verification. Game reinstallation. AV/Firewall enabling/disabling "roulette." TV/Monitor HDMI connectivity testing.

Things I'm kind of unwilling to try but will if no other option presents itself:
Reformat, system restore, PC replacement (LAST LAST LAST LAAAAST RESORT)

Googling is completely fruitless and I can only find similar, but not exact symptoms to problems that are totally unlike my own. Seems this is a specific case. Any ideas and help are significantly appreciated!!!

Solution

First issue I see is 410W. The 1070 needs a 500W minimum QUALITY PSU with a complete system in mind. I'll finish looking through this thread now.

I'd have to agree with you with the HDMI issue. Which HDMI cable do you have? 1.4 or 2.0?

I don't see a driver reinstallation after the new TV was in place. You can use Geforce Experience. Click on Drivers. Click on reinstall driver. See if that helps. I purchased a cheaper HDMI cable for my old TV(which died) and during its slow and painful death there was this odd snow that appeared. That was due to the HDMI cable. Enter a new 32" D32x-D1 Vizio HDTV(1080p) This TV went to black and then back to regular on occasion. Fiddling with the cable eventually solved the issue. It's just a low quality cable. The reason I blame the cable is because of the odd snow on the last TV with no fix and a black screen with this TV. I have ordered a new cable.

But with games crashing that moves my suspicion away from the cable and back over to the driver.
