I found an image of a laptop I had made in 2013 on a USB external hard drive and using Windows Image restore, clicked on "Restart your computer and continue the recovery". I had the External HDD plugged into the laptop and hit Restart.
The laptop restarted, the fans whirred....but that was all. I left the black screen for 5 minutes with the fans still whirring and decided it must have been the wrong image or some other problem. Restarted, disconnected the external drive but still a black screen with whirring fans but nothing else.
Tried restarting with a W7 system restore disk in the CD drive, then a W7 Installation disk and even a Ubunto install on USB stick but nothing. Took the battery out, held the power button down for a minute, still no change. The first three or four times the fans where whirring quite fast but now its just idling as if it has given up.
This is my first post (anywhere about anything) as I normally surf the web for days until I find out how to fix something but I'm out of ideas and fear I may have bricked a perfectly decent laptop. As you can see from the fact I tried to load an image I wasn't entirely sure was the right one, I'm not the smartest laptop repair guy out there, just a dad that tinkers a bit too much so if anyone can help me save this laptop it would be much appreciated.
*EDIT*
After an hour it decided to boot into recovery mode so panic over.
