Hey guys. I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, and I apologize...I just know this kind of answer can change every month. I'm currently using:

Z270P-D3
I7-7700k
16GB DDR4 @ 3000
GTX 970 Reference

I plan on getting a Vive or Rift (decisions..........) in the next 3-6 months and I'd like to lock down a good GPU before-hand. I keep hearing 1070 is the VR sweet spot, so I'm probably going that route. Thought about a 1080...but seems like the extra $200 isn't worth it. If I ever find the GPU wanting I could just SLI (is it true that SLI is a better choice for VR since it's similar to dual monitors?)

So anyway, I don't mind spending $450-500, I just want the (arguably) BEST choice for a 1070. I have my eye on this one... https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126109 Great reviews and rating. BUT...the issue is it's just barely too big for my Zalman Z11 Plus.

I've grown attached to this case and modded it a bunch already so I don't want to bother getting a new case. And considering I don't even use the lower HDD bay I might just get a dremel tool and make a project out of it.

Now all of that said...and keep that GPU choice in mind....can anyone offer a comparable choice in power and reliability that will actually FIT my case? Thanks a lot for any info!

I would back Gigabyte up as a good card company, i use to only purchase them. After i bought a x800 from ati in 2004 i thought i was cool. Then 7950 gx2s came out in 2006 i had to have them lol only 1200 dollars.... They ended up setting on fire in my case since i over clocked them so much to run crysis max.. They replaced them immediately also giving me free stuff in process. I went through 3 generations cards with them till they stopped making cars. Then i switched over too EVGA, Now i am with MSI EK X 1070 since they were only one I could get a 1070 that still had samsung memory in it in november also it had a water block on it for my already custom loop i had currently. all in all Gigabyte is a good brand

I feel with 1080 you are saving yourself for future titles. Also maybe if you wait a month or possibly two. Wait for 1080TI to come out and see if 1080 drops in price. VR is actually pretty cool, I just tried it out on my buddies PC yesterday it was a lot cooler than i thought. PLay GTA V, mine craft some other games. His set up was 7700k with 1080 gtx it ran very smooth.

Thanks for the reply, Burt! And definitely food for thought. Can you or anyone else confirm if SLI works well with VR? That would definitely influence my decision. I got a Gear VR for cheap a couple weeks ago and am actually very impressed with the motion tracking and quality, for being nothing more than a phone screen under a magnifying glass. I even plan on getting that gimmicky little wrist-shocker that prevents sim sickness, if I need it--haha.

But ya...That Strix is a SEXY card from what I've been reading. Even the 1080 version. Has me glaring at my case and contemplating how and where to saw. Lol

Have you considered the Gigabyte G1? I have this GPU and it's been great: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125871&cm_re=gigabyte_g1_1070-_-14-125-871-_-Product

Don't worry too much about store reviews / ratings when choosing a GPU - most of the time they don't really tell you anything other than what you already know.
