Hello Everyone!

I'm only 14 years old and don't have enough money to build a fully new pc right now. Luckily I work on computers all the time and know my way all around them with a collection of over 30 computers given to me (but most from before 2009 all the way to 1999)I have a Dell Optiplex 3010 that i picked up at a local savers for a huge $12 a while back! I'm want to upgrade the psu, get 8gb of ram (thats the max it can take) and add a gpu. I was thinking of adding a GTX 1050ti for 1080p gaming at a good framerate. So would this be a good combonation to be able to play some games?

Thanks!

Funny that's exactly the model and CPU that I use at work. However, there are a couple of different variations of Optiplex 3010. Mine is the minitower config, where there is also a couple of different small form factors. Do you know which you have? The minitower will accept full height PCIe cards, the SFF models will probably need a low profile 1050 Ti. The other concern is the PSU. I think the Optiplex MT comes with a 265w PSU, which may not be enough.

We use the same model PC in our robotics lab, and it works like a charm. Ours is the full size model, so if you have the same you can definitely fit a full size graphics card like the 1050. We're using a Quadro for CAD software, but putting a gaming card like that in will work as well. You may run into a few issues though. Because the case is so jam packed with everything, and it isn't technically ATX form-factor, I would measure o make sure he cad you buy isn't too long. And also if you have the smaller version of the 3010, you may need a low-profile GPU. The other issue is the power supply. Because Dell likes o cram everything into tiny spaces inside their PC cases, most are not ATX like I said before. Alot of their PSUs are custom shaped, I have a bit of an older Optiplex that has an L-shaped PSU. The one you have already probably will not be enough, but I would check to make sure that the power supply you buy is going to fit in, or you may have to get crafty. All in all though, you shouldn't run ino any bottlenecks because of the CPU and/or GPU, I'd say the 1050 is a pretty good match for that computer. Good luck!

Mine is the Minitower and it can take full hight gpus. right now I have a wicked old gts 250 in it just to get me by. I was also going to buy a new psu for it so I have space for upgrades in the future. Thanks for the reply! :)

Mine has a standard atx psu not the weird L-shaped ones. I have 3 of those older optiplex 755 desktop models that do have the L-shaped psu. For the 1050 i'll be getting a smaller formfactor card so it won't be taking up much space and probably upgrade the cpu heatsink for something with a copper base instead of the all alluminum stock heatsink.

if the system you have takes a standard atx 24-pin power supply then for sure upgrade the psu + add a rx 470 ( around the same price as a 1050 ti or maybe a bit more for significantly more performance )

that cpu is still very very good

Agreed, I would go with the AMD card and definitely upgrade the PSU, but the 470 is just a bit more expensive than the 1050, and if you're going to go a little extra I would personally just buy the 480, prices have been dropping on them recently, and one of them is an absolute beast for the price.
