Hello community! I've had a Western Digital 1TB My Passport Ultra for maybe nearly a year now, and it's been very useful for school work and video editing etc. However, it's suddenly stopped working.
It's not visible in File Explorer, and when it does appear in Device Manager it comes up as "Disk 1 | Unknown | Not Initialized"
LED turns on but every 1 minute and 5 seconds the hard drive makes a soft beep sound and it sort of sounds like it turns off and on quickly

I took it to the technicians at my school and they said they can't recover any data off of it without it appearing on the computer, and maybe there was something with the board (pointed near the light and then towards the other end of the drive)

Could you please suggest what I should do? I care about the files more than the hard drive, but I don't want to play hundreds of dollars to recover it (I can barely afford $50).

Your help is greatly appreciated

Ps. I have tried many different computers and even a Mac, but it still hasn't shown up. My dad bought my brother and sister a hard drive, and he bought me a new cable but that didn't solve the issue and my current cable works with my sibling's drives (I believe it's an SSB USB 3.0 cable?)

Regards,
DeliriousMango

Hi there DeliriousMango,

That is really unpleasant. :(

Unfortunately, if the drive is making some beeping sounds and if it disconnects every minute, you will not really be able to access it with software tools.
I see that you've performed some troubleshooting steps, which rule out a possible connections related issue. That means that there's something wrong with either the enclosure or the HDD itself.

In both cases, you will need to contact a data recovery company in order to retrieve the data. Alternatively, if the drive is under warranty, you can just contact the place you got it from our our Support and eventually RMA it: https://support.wdc.com/contact.aspx

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
