New Build thought - buy, build or wait...

Hi all,

I know a lot of people ask similar questions but this will be my first new computer build in 5 years and my timing looks to be right at the point of change in the industry.

As things stand, I would be looking to build the following system:

  • Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
DeepCool CPU Liquid Cooler (CAPTAIN 240 EX WHITE)
    GIGABYTE AORUS GA-Z270X-Gaming 7 Gaming Motherboard Z270
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 3000 C15 - White
    Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E500BW)
Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM)
CableMod ModFlex™ Basic Cable Comb Kit - Transparent - CM-Series
CableMod CM-Series VS ModFlx Cable - Red
    MSI GEFORCE GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G
    Corsair Graphite Series 760T White

I already have a 1000W Cooler Master V1000 PSU which I intend to use, if that would be sensible (it's great currently and overkill I know).

It will be used for a mix of photography work, some gaming and flight simming.

My quandary is this: Ryzen is just around the corner and it looks like I may be able to get an 8 Core processor. I know we will need to wait for benchmarks but indications suggest it'll compete with the 6900k (is that right?). My question is more about whether I should wait and jump into a new architecture (AMD, boards, Ryzen) or stick with the known entity (Intel). I currently have a 6 core 3930k which has been helpful, particularly with the flight sim stuff I do. That's why I'm not sure about getting the 7700k or waiting for the potential Ryzen 8 core.

Similarly buying a GTX 1080 now may be the wrong timing. Am I right to think that a new GTX 1080Ti or 2080 may be around the corner? Would you think a 1080 now and then an upgrade next year to the new architecture would be best? Or what about the new AMD stuff...

I know a new build is always a potential "should I wait for X" situation but I genuinely feel that it's a time when there's a potential hard choice coming up and I'd be gutted to invest in a system that is either a) outdated quickly or b) possible to get for less money on a new architecture (AMD). I was lucky with my current system that it was future proofed pretty well. I see that being harder to achieve right now.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Yeah It's something I plan to do - it's always a potential waiting game for the next big thing but right now feels genuinely interesting and Ryzen initial results indicate good things. Which will then make choosing the GPU side of things harder.

Out of interest, would the DeepCool cooler work OK on a Ryzen CPU do you think?

Why would you think Zen is just around the corner? They were supposed to be released last year but still nothing out.

I would highly question if AMD can put out anything to compete with Intel. Remember all the hype around the FX series before they were released still a flop.
I would go ahead and buy and build.

Thanks for that - I was under the impression that Ryzen is out in a few weeks (end Feb/early March)? I think once the benchmarks are in I'll make the decision on the CPU side. The harder decision may be the GPU but perhaps the next GTX is coming in March....

I would be suprised if Zen was released by July.
For the New video cards (ti) They were ready to break then out at the last tech convention thinking AMD were going to bring out the new cards to complete with the 1070/1080. That also did not happen so they put the cards back on the shelf. So no release date for them either since that is their counter to anything AMD puts out.

AMD said that the product would have widespread avalibility in early march. Several rumors are indicating a febuary 28th release date. we are now starting to get a lot of info that looks very plausible.

I would wait a week, either we will have an announcement or not. If not I would purchase the system. I also would buy a new power supply rather then using one that is 5 years old.

The more I read about AMD, Ryzen and even Vega, the more I'm inclined to wait - I want to take advantage of this competition with hopefully lower prices. Looking forward to seeing what happens in a couple of weeks as Ryzen is bench-marked properly!
