The past few days i've been streaming on my old i5-2500k and some games (BF1, Vermintide and others) are really getting choppy even at 30 fps. Back when i built the bulk of this pc (2012) i hadn't intended on streaming at all.

Basically my question is what are some good components to upgrade to that have great price - performance value. I'll be getting my tax refunds soon (should be around $700) and i already have my hard drives / gpu taken care of (970).

The only components i think i'll need will be a new CPU, Motherboard, RAM and CPU cooler. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and the lower the price the better but i don't want to compromise too much performance. The goal for me is to stream in 720p at 60 fps.

Wait for ryzen release. Since they have a lot of cores , streaming won't be a problem. Also they come with some nice features for streaming and MMOs that reduces input lag (they showed it in a demo event). Ryzen is going to be released at the end of the month , with full benchmarks appearing at the same time . They are going to be cheaper than Intel and perform rather the same.

My assumption is that AMD will perform poorly (just a guess based on how they've done previously), so what are some good intel cpu + motherboard combinations? For the CPU it seems the 7700k is the new hot thing but for motherboards i'm not exactly well versed on what are good brands for those.

If you don't want to wait for Ryzen then this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157746 board might be good for you.

I too, as a gamer, see AMD CPUs as something not too desirable. Ryzen is set to change that belief. Vega GPUs, on the far horizon (towards the end of this year) are also changing in a big way(VRAM).

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148865 No need to upgrade RAM for at least a couple years(most likely more).

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF2DZ6565&cm_re=Cryorig_H7-_-13C-000U-00005-_-Product will handle the 7700K overclocked.

A smaller but still worthwhile upgrade is the 1060. Sell that 970 and you will be more than halfway to a 1060. A performance boost and 2 more GB of VRAM. If I was going to be going your route(from a 4690K and a 970FTW) to another board, CPU, RAM and cooler I would be looking at the 1060 if I really didn't want to invest that much into a GPU upgrade. My next GFX card will be a 1070 or maybe one of the new Vega GFX cards.

are asrock motherboards somewhat stable now? i had to replace a board a few years back because it just straight up died on me. i did replace it with another one which has yet to fail but it's coming around to the same lifespan as the old one

as for the gpu upgrades i have an old 7850 i've had sitting around and will eventually sell, where are some good places to sell graphics cards? do people on ebay actually buy them? if i were to upgrade my gpu i'd just spend some extra and get the 1070 to futureproof myself for a long while, since i only play at 1080p

Imo they have came up in the world. Usually Gigabyte or Asus would be one of my offerings. As you can see by the reviews it's been well received.

Sure they do. Find the card and then on the left look for Sold Listings. That can give you an idea about pricing. Did it take 6 months and multiple re-postings? Idk. Local online classified?

The 1070 would be MUCH happier with the 6600K. Your upload speed plays a HUGE part in fluidity (No clue where that word came from). So too does your SSD(if you have one) help with streaming. Wouldn't you want to show your gaming in all its glory? 1080? Then again it is just the 6600K. 720 is much more reasonable. With a 6700K? Well, you know.

i'm not too worried about streaming in 1080p as my upload isn't what i would like it to be (4 mbs).

as for the graphics card, do games in 1080p need the extra vram already? it's hard for me to tell because i know my cpu is capping out and it's not letting me get a real estimate for how well my gpu is doing.

Yep. 720 at 60 or less is best.

Use MSI Afterburner https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner if you want to know that. With a quick look

I can see I was using a little less than 2.8GB out of 4GB of VRAM.

Click gear. Click Monitoring tab. Make sure memory usage is checked. Click Show in OSD(lower part of that window). Get to gaming. You can of course enable many other things. Enable RAM usage to see???? Yep. RAM usage. CPU and GPU temps and load. Much more to see.
