So I have some bits and pieces kicking around and want to see if I can build a fairly decent, older gaming rig. Have put in upgraded cpu in an older dell, but nothing this extreme. I have an Asus M2N-E mobo, and will soon be getting my hands on a AMD phenom II x4 965 CPU. I have some arctic Silver 5 left over as well. I know this may not work but would like to give it a shot. Can someone give me a hand with a step by step? I know I need to download updated bios prior to installing the CPU, but could not find specifics on the Asus website. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You got it backwards, the cpu has 938 pins and am2 has 940. Am3 cpus were made to be compatible with am2 mobos. This was the big thing with amd during that era that people could upgrade their cpu without changing mobo. You can even look at the cpu support list showing am3. https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M2NE/HelpDesk_CPU/

There's not much to do really. There is no such thing as cpu drivers for windows. You just update the bios which you get from asus. Do you need steps to put in the cpu? Because that's all there is to it.

Okay, thanks for all the info/help. Yep, all ready to tint the heatsink and CPU when it arrives. My big concern is heat issues, and also which Bios update. So I just need to go to Asus and find the M2N-E mobo and find most recent bios, and download prior to swapping chips? Just want to avoid bricking if possible, but computer is not very useful as is right now so willing to jump in. Thanks again!
