I have a Dell Precision M6500 portable workstation. It has 2x 500GB HDD (Toshiba). The primary drive has OS (Windows7) & other programs on it- Ms Office, AutoCAD, etc. The secondary drive has files on it (not programs). My question is...can I clone the primary drive (with OS & other (legit) programs) to a SSD (say 1TB) drive & then replace the primary HDD with it? Any recommendations for SSD's & cloning software. Should be easy to copy secondary drive. Thanks in advance.

Solution
Assuming you have enough SATA Ports, I've found it best to leave the new drive plugged into the port it was created on rather than putting it where the old HDD was. It eliminates any confusion in teh BIOS.
It will work but it's important to make sure the original system hard disk is removed or at least, disconnected, before you boot up using the SSD the first time. Sorry if that sounds patronising but you'd be suprised at the number of folks who fall for it. If the system sees two disks both claiming to be C\: chaos will ensue.

I use Acronis True Image but I fix PCs for a living so it's worth paying for. You may think otherwise but the freebies don't do it as well.

Thanks for that Saga Lout. Sounds good!Just doing my "homework" before attempting to swap. That was my intention- clone to SSD. Replace original HDD with new cloned SSD then boot. Thanks again
