I have a build that consists of an MSI z87-g43 haswell with an i5 4430 and evga 500 psu. My case is falling apart and the fans are dieing so I was gonna order a new case, but I was looking at an upgrade kit of either Intel Core i5-6500 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.2 GHz LGA 1151, GIGABYTE LGA 1151 H110 Micro ATX MB, Team Elite Plus 8GB DDR4 2133 MEM for $293.....or Intel Core i5-6600K Skylake Quad-Core 3.5Ghz CPU, ASRock Z170 Pro4 LGA 1151 ATX MOBO, G.SKILL NT Series 8GB DDR4 2400 MEM for $372....or should i just order the case and hold off on upgrading due to these upgrades from what I have being so negligible?

Solution
the 4th gen core CPUs perform the same (or even better) than 6th gen on the same clock.
so i5-6500 has 400MHz more -> ~12% more. that translates to less than 10% performance in real life.
so just fix your case/fans and upgrade later to something like i7 or whatever AMD will show.

Solution
One more vote to keep the rig. Replace case and fans. Which GPU do you have, BTW? Unless it is a GTX1060 or better (or RX470/480 or better) you could consider upgrading the GPU instead for more performance. If you don't own an SSD, that's also an option. First one would boost gaming a lot, secound one would boost general performance in Windows a lot.

I have the Asus gtx 750ti oc 2gd5. I just added an SSD and you're right, it did boost general performance. Thnx for your quick reply!

Yeah, I think you're right. I'll just wait a month or two and add a couple hundred and get an i7 and z170 or z270 and have it last a couple years longer than what the upgrades I was looking at would. Thnx for the timely reply m8

I agree, a couple hundred more would add more of an upgrade and a couple years longer to my build. I'll just wait and save a bit more before purchasing upgrades. thnx for the quick response m8!
