I have a homebuild, running windows 10. I have Internet service provided by Access Media 3. They supply a modem, but I have no router, yet.
While running an AV scan (Avast) it picked up an unknown IP and a router on my system. The router is a Casa Systems router.
Am I seeing an upstream router from my service provider or is something hinky going on?

Solution
Might be a little overkill depending on needs but I recommend this :https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MYTAURW/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is basically the $155 Asus AC68U with T-Mobile branding and slightly modified firmware for only $82. If you are reasnibly savy (flashed firmwares before and have used putty) then you can modify the cfe and unlock all the features. If you want to do this then pm me and I can give you instructions.

No matter what at least get something that is dual band, in apartments the 2.4 band is so congested it is almost unusable so having everything on the 5ghz band will be much better.
You really really should get a router.

Running an internet connection without a router is like having a door with no walls. Doesnt really matter how good of a deadbult or how heavy duty of a door you have when people can walk right around it.
The router provides a seperation between WAN (internet) and LAN (home computers/devices) connections. This much needed layer of security shields your devices from the internt and thus the router will ignore all unsolicited traffic trying to come in.

Thanks Boosted!
A router is my next purchase. Can you recommend a model? We have a one bedroom Apartment, and both of us use tablets on a daily basis.
Netgear, Linksys et al.
Many thanks for the quick answer.
