Hello,

This is not really a troubleshooting post but more of an ELI5 one.

My friend and I have similar builds: we both have a 6700k with a Kraken x61 (with the same curve) as cooling system inside a NZXT h440v2 case and we both have a EVGA GTX 1080. The only difference is the motherboard, I have a ASUS z170 Pro Gaming and he has a Maximus Hero VIII.

When we play the same games in co-op he has much lower CPU temperatures than me. He get max 45°C with the same graphic settings but at 1440p and I get max 62°C at 1080p. His CPU run with the ASUS turbo mode and go up to 1,4 vcore when playing, I disabled my Turbo mode so mine just go to 1.32 vcore. I just reapply my thermal paste 1 or 2 weeks ago so that should not be the problem.

I don't worry about having 62°C while gaming (unless i should?) but i'm just wondering why, with the same build except from a few parts, he get 15-20 °C less than me while playing the same game?

To resume :

  • Same CPU and GPU, same cooling system, fan curve and case. Different motherboard.

Playing the same game, same graphic settings but different resolution.

I have a lower resolution and max vcore.

Why does i have 15-20°C higher temperatures ?

Bonus question : Is it normal when i launch firefox or refresh my email box my CPU package jump from 20°C idling to 45-50°C for a 1-2 seconds?

Thanks in advance for enlightening me !

One proublem might be room temperature. He might have an air conditioner on, and he might be using a better thermal compound. If you are worried, go for a water cooler.

I'm using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and I put a between a grain of rice and a pea sized drop.

Ambient temperature should be no more different than a few degree between his room and mine, mine is probably colder. We have the same amount of fans but his front fans have slightly more RPM than mine, for the same model.

Also if I put my kraken at performance or balanced mode, the temperatures while playing, does not change at all for me.

I'm not worried, today I played 3 hours of Rainbow Six : Siege and my CPU did not go over 62°C on max settings.

I'm just wondering why there is so much difference in temperatures with a similar build. Maybe i got a "bad" CPU chip I don't even know if that a possibility?

I'm using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste and he still have the stock thermal paste of the Kraken. My room is a few degrees cooler than his .

No, the only thing that is running background while gaming are downloads and it's not using any CPU load.

Check your friend´s and yours cpu usage while gaming, Maybe your cpu is under heavier load while gaming than his, since you´re playing in 1080 and he is playing in 1440p, since in 1440p the gpu usage is more, therefore less cpu usage. Maybe.

The answer is the different motherboards and CPU "lottery".

To your bonus question, yes, your temperatures can rise while using Firefox in any MS Window OS, although Windows 10 Pro 64 bit does a better job regarding fewer or lower temperature spikes.
