I have 5 case fans in my computer. 2 came with the tower, 3 are optional extras (1 extra upfront, 2 extra on top). Recently my computer has begun to sound more and more like a Geiger counter and I've narrowed it down to both of the top 2 case fans.

Question is: Can it be stopped or are they dead?
Other Question is: All 3 optional were identical, are there any fans that work better horizontally as opposed to vertical? (The 3rd which is on the front doesn't tick)

Solution
Agree. Probably the bearing. You can see if the center shaft has a rubber plug under the sticker. If so remove that and apply a drop or two of lube. Silicone is best.

Still ticking, 100% no wires catching on either of the 2 fans, there's no ticking if they are running at 100% but the ticking is most prominent at 40-60% which they typically sit at.

if you disconnect the fans from the case and hold it in your hand they still tick?

then the bearing is getting defective and they probably will soon stop to spin.

I suggest replacing them. I can give you a few suggestions for good fans if you specify size & budget
