Hello everyone,

I'm a bit of an (informed) noob. I have researched the topic extensively and even followed some troubleshooting guides here on tomshardware with no luck.

I have an issue with my new (and first) build where sometimes the PC only starts for a fraction of a second and then turns off again. The LEDs on the motherboard and video card are and remain on during the process.

I have tried the following:

- checked/unplugged/replugged all connections from the PSU to motherboard, GPU and SSD/HDD - problem returned

- checked LED connectors on motherboard (i thought they might be shorting - seemed to solve the problem for a while however issue returned)

- pulled out RAM, re-installed one by one - problem returned

- pulled out GPU, re-installed - problem returned

- unplugged all fans, and CPU connectors and replugged - problem returned

- removed CMOS battery and re-installed - problem returned

Once the computer is on the problem never manifests itself - it is only when switching it on or restarting it. After switching the PSU off at the back for a few minutes the system starts again.

These are my specs:

Case: Fractal design define S

PSU: EVGA 550 GS

CPU: AMD FX 8350

Cooling: Corsair H80i V2

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 2400MHz

Motherboard: Asus 970 PRO gaming

GPU: Asus Strix GeForce 1060

SSD: Samsung 250gb

HDD: Seagate 2TB SSHD

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tahnks

The 1060 only requires about 430W so should have been enough wattage wise. Guess you got a bad unit is all. If your overclocking the 8350 could be pulling a lot of juice if it was running 4.5Ghz+ maybe. Doesn't work for you tho so send it back The supernova G2 or Seasonic S12G should work for your system.

Sounds like either a grounding or motherboard pcb wires expanding once warm to work. Try unbolting the motherboard and taking it out of the case. Leave everything plugged up and set the motherboard on the motherboard box. See if the issue remains without possiblity of the motherboard grounding on the case. If it works then I suggest you get plastic standoffs. If not then you may need a new motherboard.

Thanks for the reply Elbert, good shout on the plastic standoffs I didn't know they existed. I'm getting some braided psi cables soon so I'll swap em out then. Cheers

Ok, I have dismantled the motherboard and checked all the standoffs and they look fine. Started the isolated mobo with only the cpu fans connected and it worked fine. After screwing the mobo back in and reconnecting everything the problem reappeared :( so I disconnected one cable at a time to try and isolate the issue and when I got to the GPU cable the pc started again. Reconnected and the issue reappeared... disconnected and the problem was still there!! So it appears it's not the GPU after all. Cleared cmos to no avail. Could it be a psu issue? Using online calculators it would seem that 550W is enough for my setup, what do you guys think? Thanks for the help

After switching to an old 700w Huntkey PSU the problem appears to be resolved. Is it actually a faulty EVGA 550w GS or does my setup require more juice? Any suggestions welcome, thanks
