GPU crashing on random power surges while gaming

Whenever the GPU is under even the slightest amount of stress, after some seemingly random amount of time the display driver will crash. Up until now I thought that this was a GPU issue, but I've read other threads where people described something similar, and the opinion varied. Here are some details:

- Increasing the GPU fan speed to around 70-80% makes the issue far less frequent, although if it does happen then it tends to crash the computer entirely.
- MSI Afterburner shows the power surging to 100% whenever it crashes. It's a sudden spike. Picture below shows this happening (note that this started long before I got Afterburner).

- Nothing else seems out of the ordinary when I'm gaming. The rest of the graphs seem fine.
- Only the GPU appears to be affected. I've never had a blue screen of death or any other form of error in my computer bar the consistent crashing while gaming.
- I've had this setup for a good few years now, but the issue has also persisted for around two years. No graphics drivers help.

Here are the specs of my PC

- Intel i5 4660k
- 8GB RAM
- ASUS Z87K Motherboard
- MSI Nvidia GeForce 770 Twin Frozr GPU
- 1TB Harddrive
- Corsair HX750

Up until now I assumed that this was entirely a GPU issue, but I'm not so sure any more. I unfortunately cannot afford a new GPU at the moment, so if it is a GPU issue then I'll have to be stuck with it, but if it's PSU then something might hopefully be done. Thank you for your time and I hope you can help me!

Is anything overclocked, or was overclocked? Especially the video card.

Did you test the card in another system or another card in yours (even a borrowed one)? The only way to test the card correctly is to try it in a known good system with a good power supply.

I have a very similar problem, since yesterday everytime i play games my display drivers crash and theres no way to get to signal back to my monitor unless i restart manualy my computer by holding the power button on my pc tower. I downloaded openhardwaremonitor monitor my average GPU temp while gaming is 68ºC and my GPU load is around 70-80% in most games.

Heres what i tryed to fix this so far :

- Uninstalling Nvidia drivers, Ccleaned and reinstalling nvidia driver still crashing
- 1280x720 low graphic still crashing
- Formatted windows 10 64bits still crashing
- Unpluged all unnecessary pc hardware (extra HDD,LEDs,optical drive) still crashing
- Fresh BIOS update still crashing

So in my opinion i think its a hardware failure (broken GPU) because i tryed both my gtx 970 and my old gtx 650ti same game settings (1920x1080 medium graphic in Smite) and my gtx 970 strix lasted 5 mins while the gtx 650ti lasted over an hour without any problem!

So what is your opinions on that?

Thank you!

PC specs:

- Intel i7 6700k
- 2x8GB Kingston Hyperx fury 2400mhz
- Asus Z170-A Motherboard
- Asus Gtx 970 Strix DC2OC-4GD5
- Samsung 840 series 120gb
- 500gb HDD WD green
- Cooler Master V750

No. Unfortunately I do not have another system to test the card on. I do have a spare card, but it is an ancient GTX 220 so I doubt it would give an accurate result. I will keep those suggestions in mind next time I am home, where I might be able to use my brother's rig to test it. Unfortunately that will not be until April.
