I'm going to try and access my files from an old 3.5 desktop hardrive,I've bought a IDE/sata adaptor but no power cord to supply power to my hardrive .Can I use a Dekstop PSU to power the hardrive(via molex to SATA) and still connect the hardrive to my laptop and access my files?

Solution

What turns this PSU on? Just the switch on the back does not do it.

A part that WILL work for 3.5" drives would be something like this:
[strike]https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Docking-Station-DS-UBLK/dp/B00IKAQ538[/strike]
[strike]$22. USB to your laptop, power from the wall.[/strike]

Correction...you specified an IDE drive.
This one will do IDE and SATA drives

You need some way to start the PSU up. Paperclip, possibly.
Better to return the thing you purchased, and buy the correct device to externally connect a 3.5" drive. They are inexpensive..

I do not understand what you mean.I have a working PSU with all the cables needed to run a desktop, this means I have the cable(sata) to power my hard drive.Theoretically i just need to plug my psu to my hard drive and connect the data cable to my laptop via adaptor data adaptor.
