1050Ti or RX470 - Worth it?

Hi Guys,

As per a previous Thread I made, i sold my 750Ti and i was planning to upgrade to a GTX 1050Ti. However there is currently a really good Deal at the moment for a $10 Difference(Australian, that’s like a $5 US) between the EVGA 750 TI 2GB Model and the RX 470 Strix.

I know the RX 470X is faster, however my problem lies with my PSU. From what I can tell its not a bad PSU but its also not the best. The model is TT-450NL2NK, also please note it is not the LT-450NL2NK which is nearly identical but a different model.

THE RX 470 only requires a 6pin Connector however Im not sure if I should upgrade the PSU, however Im then breaking the bank having to upgrade the PSU also. Not sure if its worth the difference from the 1050TI.

Im not sure if my psu will handle the RX470 or if I should upgrade the PSU. Someone recommended me Seasonic S12 520Watt, however they go for about $120 here in Australia and didn’t really want to spend that much.

The upgrading PSU aspect does break my budget. I been having a look for a cheap PSU in the Under $80 AU category and it seems I can either Go Corsair VS series or Thermaltake Lightpower. Not really sure if either of these two are worth it. I know I could spend extra and get a decent Bronze model however it then pushes out my budget and then I think it was better of staying/going with the 1050Ti option.

These are australian prices and where I purchase my Parts. If someone could jump on this URL and tell me something they recommend thats cheap that would be great.

The RX 470 is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra $10, but the fact that you have to get a new power supply complicates it a bit. I don't see a 6-pin connector on that PSU and I wouldn't recommend using a molex to 6-pin adapter. So, it falls down to what your goals are for this rig and future rigs. Are you ever going to want to upgrade to higher tier GPUs that require a decent power supply? Because if you are, then a power supply is an investment for the future that can span multiple rigs if you buy a good one. If you're content with the 1050 ti class of cards' performance, then I'd just get that and consider upgrading your whole rig when you need your next GPU. Also the Seasonic S12 is ok, but you can get a good 80+ gold PSU for not much more money in most cases.

If that PSU has no 6 or 6+2 pin connector then no, it's not suitable for anything more than the 1050 Ti. The 470 is a great step up, but you are right in that the extra cost of the PSU then renders the 470 less of a deal. If you were going to spend that amount(PSU+GPU) then you might as well go with a 480 or 1060. So since cost is a factor I'd go with the 1050 Ti.

Remember that a good power supply will last you through multiple gpu upgrade cycles. EVGA supernova models have a 7-10 year warranty.

Thanks Guys, What I ended up doing is I bought a second hand GTX 970 for a cheaper Price than the 1050Ti, I then bought a Corsair TX650 PSU and I come out $20 more expensive than a 1050Ti, however Im now using a GTX970
