ok so im looking to buy a used amd gpu so i can play doom 4 battle field 1 and the witcher 3 on high settings at 1080p with a decent frame rate. right now i have a gtx 960 2 gig version which doesnt play well with doom 4. below is a link to the specs for my power supply

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01709672#N10081

would i see a some what decent performance boost if i stuck a second gtx 960 2 gig in there for sli assuming my hp workstation supports sli?

also for those who ask my power supply is proprietary meaning its a custom built psu specifically made for this pc so an off the shelf psu wont work

lastly i dont have a budget im just asking this question

You really have almost no option with a used AMD gpu as they use more power then NVIDIA does.
And no, even assuming your 475w PSU is made with very high quality, it still cant handle 2 960s in SLI (the 1 is likely pushing it pretty hard).
And I see very little chance of yoru board even supporting SLI anyways.

Your only real option that is an improvement that will run on 475w is an rx-480, which is brand new and the equivelant for a 1060, so it is an improvement but not a huge one.

The 390 cards while a good improvement need way more power so that is out of the question.

If you are not limiting yourself to only AMD then your best option while keeping yoru OEM power supply woudl be a GTX 1070 which would be a big step up from a 2gb 960.

assuming i upgrade my PSU what cards in the RX 200 and RX 300 series would you recommend for doom 4

a 960 is more than capable of playing doom with over 60 fps at 1080p high

you have other problems if you are not getting decent fps

i will keep that in mind

A 470 is a very small step up from a GTX-960 so small it is not in any way worth the cost.

@OP. The only 300 serries AMD card that would be a step up would be a 390, but it would be a good bit cheaper just to get a GTX 1070 then a 390 + new PSU and the 1070 would be faster and run cooler.

So if i was coming from a GTX650 , is the RX460 or RX470 better?

Well obviously the 470 is better between the two. Now I dont know what your cpu or psu is to know what your system can handle.

HI, so i currently have an AOPEN AX500-A power supply it says 460 Watt and 500 Watt peak.
I have tried sites like Jonyguru but i really find it very unfriendly. I typed in a couple of power supplies i am looking for and it doesn't find results.

I currently have the MSI A88X G43 motherboard with AMD Athlon X4 860K and 16GB ram at 1866 but for the love it me it only runs at 1333 i really cant believe this with today's technology, you pay so much for this stuff and its always
compatibility issues- I have actually forced my bios to recognize it as a 1866 frequency memory , not sure how this makes a difference or if it even does, i would imagine the best is if the bloody thing was recognized in the first place..... and finally have an amazing TOP of the range GTX650.

Bear in in mind 8 months ago i was still on Socket 939 with DDR1 memory and a 9800 GT....and maybe 10 month before that i was on Athlon XP 2500+ with AGP 7800. Top of the range.

My question is coming, but i am trying to give the details of what my experiences are and what i want to get to , please.
I would like to get a better PSU such as a 550Watt but then somebody told me rather get a better one like a 600 or 650 or even 700/750 Watt.

Only problem is that i am limited here with what i can get for my money.

I would really appreciate it somebody can assist me in finding one or narrowing down from what i have found.

If i could just find a simple site where you can compare PSUs side by side then it will make it easier for me.

so first off i reckon getting a good warranty would be great BUT if you guys reckon the item is so good it doesn't even need
Warranty , then ill take your word for me.

I have found these of the following which i can afford. My price range is around 1000 to 1500 Rand which is ZAR (www.xe.com)

www.takealot.co.za and www.loot.co.za are the only sites i can buy from in this scenario.

I have found these PSUs to be interesting.. I reckon i should go more than 600 Watts , so would 650 do it OR should u really go as high as 700 + :

http://www.takealot.com/cooler-mast...es-750w-semi-modular-power-suppl/PLID34188986
http://www.takealot.com/aerocool-650w-vx-power-supply/PLID41402611
http://www.takealot.com/antec-vp700p-700w-power-supply/PLID41397459
http://www.takealot.com/fsp-aurum-s-700watt-power-supply/PLID41165566
http://www.takealot.com/aerocool-650w-vx-power-supply/PLID41402611
http://www.takealot.com/cooler-master-gm750w-80-modular-power-supply-black/PLID34186400 (seems like a lot of cash for me)
1500 rand is really alot of money for me but if you guys reckon it is important to have a good PSU i guess i need to byte the bullet. I was actually going to originally buy a graphics card like an RX460....

I do have future plans to get 2x RX470 graphics cards by Power Color.
I have noticed that there are a few mixed reviews on how much wattage you should have for x amount of graphics cards.

Anyways if you guys can assist me in please find a decent power supply from the list above AND HOPEFULLY it is a vital component for the PC to run efficiently ?

Appreciate you going through the list of the PSUs i found above....
I reckon for me, getting 8pin and 6 pin PCI-e, is essential as apparently you do not want to play with Molex to 6/8 pin connectors so i was told.
I wanted to ask the experts online like you guys in this community, thanks.

I would like to be running 2 graphics cards in my system with possibly a 3rd and 4th in future using PCI Risers,
I just cant afford to buy and make a mistake.... perhaps i need to get a decent 500 Watt or maybe the one i have ia already fine and it is just about me finding another gfx card now to insert in to another old Intel 775 i have... its very very slow though it does have a PCI-E slot. I also have my ancient X2 4400+ socket 939 motherboard which i can put a card in to ?

Then again do i want to run 3 machines where i can just run one which more newer technology.

you only need a GOOD 450w for a rx 470

520w to have headroom

you dont want to crossfire cards with your setup, your cpu is too weak and would gain virtually nothing in doing so unless you were mining

a single rx 470 would be beyond max

all of those power supplies you listed are basically low tier

the antec HCG is very good... but they dont have the 520w model

http://www.takealot.com/antec-hcg-620w-80-plus-bronze-psu/PLID41693754

overkill but still within your budget

Thanks for replying, im really sad to hear my CPU is not good? i really cant understand it, bearing in mind i came from the word of DDR1 and old AGP still.. my Gosh.
I am very tempted to go ahead and get this PSU - How do you feel about the semi modular option - http://www.takealot.com/cooler-mast...es-750w-semi-modular-power-suppl/PLID34188986 ?

I see they have Corsair there also BUT only have a 650 or 600 Watt which is not what i want.
I am talking in terms of if say i want to eventually use 3 GPUs in future.

I an leaning towards the coolermaster there because of the 5 year warranty, and 2 reviews i saw say it is a decent PSU.
I am just not certain if it has 8 pin connectors for say 2 GPU;s which is what i want to get - 2x RX470

yes the V series is good

again, unless you are mining for crypto currency using more that a single rx 470 is literally money down the toilet for gpu power you will NEVER see with your current setup

that processor is entry level, it would bottleneck a SINGLE rx 470

you cannot add rockets to a mule and make it fly

Out of what I see on the site the Antec VP and corsair CX are decent.

Dont go with coolermaster, they do not make a good psu at all. Any review of a PSU that has not disassembled it, insepcted all its components and hooked up to test equipment, is not a valid review; so anything an individual says about a PSU in a review is almost worthless.

I am sorry to burst your bubble but your setup is not even remotely capabile of handling 2, 3 or 4 gpus. A RX 470 would be pushing that cpu to its absolute max and 1 470 card is going to be better then getting 2-3 weaker CPUs.
Also, if you were dead set on the 3-4 gpu option then 600w would be grossly insufficient. For that you would need more like 1000w and you would want to make damn sure it is top shelf quality gold/platinum rated PSU from a top notch brand (like seasonic, superflower, etc).

So please give it to me in laymans terms what are my options here please?
Do i go with 2 GPUS ? RX470.... and run them together in 1 machine

Do i use each on different boards.... thing is my old board i doubt is pci-e x16 version 3.
And it might be more dumb because of power utilization.

... I do plan to get a newer CPU in the future and motherboard also, as it seems the FM2 was a wrong choice WHEN taking mining in consideration.
Its either AM3 for me or AM4 but if it is expensive then AM3 , or Intel something , i3 or i5 of some sort.... i will check CPU Mark for anything at least double of what i have now,.
I think my AMD currently does 5500 odd points,

Never seen seasonic here in SA but i have seen superflower. However, because of my situation i would like to use my discovery miles on my card to purchase almost 75 % of the PSU unit. Unfortunately that being said, i am limited to www.loot.co.za and www.takealot.co.za online stores only.
If you could please take a look for me i would be grateful.

I did see a review on a site and they opened it up , they reckon it is a great PSU:
http://www.takealot.com/cooler-master-vangaurd-v750-series-750w-semi-modular-power-suppl/PLID34188986
I initially looked at Corsair because everybody knows and does and likes the brand.... however they have 650 watt max and then the other are super expensive.

To think i initially wanted AM3 6300 or AM3 8530 i think it was BUT when i heard about heat and power usage ....i then saw the FM2 was new and the price was good for the X4 860k i got.... too bad its not good for data computations and even encoding x265 its pretty slow. 3-4 hours for a 58 minute documentary in 10 bit depth from original blu-ray source bit rate of 15-20 odd kbps and a file size of 15 GB.

If i can add i did also see these as a decent prices -
http://www.takealot.com/antec-vp700p-700w-power-supply/PLID41397459
http://www.takealot.com/fsp-aurum-s-700watt-power-supply/PLID41165566

I can not find a review for them though,

Thank you for comforting me, i do know that this cpu is very very good for games i have played so far , they all work.... BUT for me maybe because i am not familiar with this new world.... REMEMBER I WAS IN the AGP 7800 and socket 939 with 9800GT not too long ago. My current GTX 650 is not good though for mining also, it is very weak , even the 560 ti kills it.
Also for newISH or newer games like Battlefield 4 , u can not play this on high settings.
My gfx card only has 1 gb of ram also i guess.

When i bought this stuff at the time it was pretty decent stuff to me and it seemed good , but i simply can not believe the power when u cpu mine , it is really weak. If i had the cash like everybody else then i probably would not even be here asking questions.

I simply want to get decent graphics card/s RX470 is my choice for now
At the same time with these points i get on my credit card i wanted to get a test card like a GTX 950 or a 1050 or a RX460... BUt then i thought let me rather get the PSU instead... and then buy 2 RX470s
