I recently installed a new Seagate Desktop ST5000DM002 as second drive in my old Asus X58 based PC running Windows 7. The drive works fine except for one thing: When accessed after idle for more then ~10 seconds the drive responds, but only after a small delay (~1 second) and a pretty loud "startup" sound, as if the drive goes into sleep mode after 10 seconds without activity. Very annoying when browsing many file etc.

Has anyone experienced something similar or any good suggestions ?

Thanks...

Hey there, Creimers.

The delay is normal if the drive spins up and the sound is most probably caused by the drive's arm moving from its "parking spot". As for the drive going into idle mode and spinning down in such a small period after being used - it must be due to its firmware if it's not some sort of fault. You should get in touch with the HDD manufacturer's customer support for more info on that.
It might be a good idea to download the drive's diagnostic tool as well and test it, just to make sure that everything's OK.

Hope that helps.
