I want to build a computer for my recording studio and I need speed and bandwidth.

I currently have a ASUS with 2 Xeon E5-2620v2 that run 2.6 GHz Max Turbo with 15 MB SmartCache.

My Motherboard is the ASUS Z9PA-D8. It is built as a server and works well for multi core applications for editing video. It was built to Adobe standards so no problem there.

But for music application I have problems with this build. Many VST's are not coded for multi core and usually will max out 1 core. So in music, speed and bandwidth are a must and not cores.

So my questions are:

1. Will a XEON 3.8 (Max Turbo) with 25M of Cashe be better than a i7 4.5 GHZ with 8M of Cashe
since it's transferring 25M of Cashe vs. 8M of Cashe?

Also, what about Bandwidth on the motherboard? Would an ASUS 200 series be better than my current ASUS Z9PA-D8 for bandwidth? I can always update my processor to the E5-2643 v2 in my current daw but the upgrade is pricy (1 processor is $1,600 new and $900 used) vs. building an entire new computer.

I don't mind building a new computer with another XEON and a motherboard that can handle the bandwidth, but if an screaming i7 makes more sense than that's what I need to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

In single threaded applications, clock speed always wins. Generations of hardware also contribute to the 7700K being faster since it is 3 generations newer. You will get DDR4 RAM with the 7700K that you won't get with a V2 Xeon. The i7 is the better choice.

Thanks kanewolf for your reply!

What about the ASUS 200 series? Would that be a good choice? I don't need all the bells and whistle for a recording computer, but would like as many USB ports I can get as well as PCIe slots! :)

Cool! No problem spending the cash and I'll go with the Kaby Lake as well.

With that said, would you go with ASUS? The ASUS PRIME Z270-A is like $169 while the ASUS ROG Maximus IX is $389.

Those look great! But what about Thunderbolt? I'm away from the studio so I'll see if they support Thunderbolt in the manana.

Here's a TB card from ASUS that looks pretty good.
