so i ordered parts for upgrading my pc, including an MSI H110M GAMING Mobo and an i3 6100, and im curious as how to get an os on there as i dont have a budget for a new windows 7 disc. I bought this computer from a dude, it has windows 7 ultimate on it. can i just create a usb or dvd install to put it on the new motherboard or no? or what are other ways to install windows

thank you

The MediaCreation tool would have created that USB install all on its own.

But if you can boot from what you made with Rufus, that will work.

Before you go any farther, try booting from what you created. I am unsure that you actually did it correctly.

If and only if you have the actual license key, you can download the Windows 7 ISO from here.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

If you don't have it, see if you can discover it with Belarc Advisor. (assuming the original system still runs)

However...if it is an OEM Win 7 license, you may be out of luck. That is tied to the original motherboard.

Buying parts for a new PC needs to include consideration of the OS. It is just as important as all the other parts.

'bought a key online'
Unless it is from a valid authorized retailer, it is not a valid license key.
Microsoft/Amazon/Newegg...

All those cheap key sites are not valid.

You can install Win 10, and run it unauthorized until you can buy a valid license key.
You lose out on Personalization, but other than that...it runs.

So i downloaded windows 10 on a usb using windows media creation tool er whatever it is, and used rufus as it wasnt being found by the media tool application. and i created a ISO Image on the usb. So can that be used to install unactivated windows on the new motherboard?
