So i got this new laptop HP pavillion 15, it has i7-7500u 2.7-3.5ghz. 4gb ram ddr4, gt 940mx 4gb vram ddr4.
Playing other game has no problem(i think haven't try any game as intense as gta5) im not really into gamming but this bother me the most because even if i set gt5 to the lowest resolution and graphics it still shutters after few minutes. If i start the game from 720 medium it shutter instantly or 1080. So at first i was like na maybe this can't handle gta 5, but my friend had like a i5 5500u 2gb ram 940 1gb vram. And can go smoothly at 720 high. And its not like only shutter once in a while it lags like all time, worse as i play longer, I updated every driver, plug the laptop, set high performance, update all I can update, even mess with the geforce 3d settings. I already sent this at warranty but all they do is change the hard drive and the problem was not fixed at all.

Stuttering is the system stopping to load. You have 4gb of ram, which is below the recommended minimum (8gb), so the system has to shuffle stuff out of the ram, and new stuff in. You're going to need to upgrade components, or possibly just deal with it unfortunately.

To caveat, open world games work by loading only sections of the map that are visible, usually up to a certain range where it's almost too far for you to see in the first place. Render distance options effect stuff like this, as far as how much loads and what you can see. If you're moving around a lot in an open world game it's constantly having to move data into and out of the ram and it doesn't have the room to just stick the extra information in, it has to wait for the old to go out before the new comes in.

but, friend had a laptop which was only 2gb ram ddr4 and was able to not get any shutter nor lag, and I tried lowering everything that can lower on the game but it still shutter, after few min, like i was like in 800x600 resolution all the rendering and population where the lowest and graphics were at the lowest too. also in the gta5 graphics settings there's a video memory using meter it shows i have total of 3999 something and i was only using 1.5-2gb.

Different systems operate differently. Without knowing exactly what he had (all components), and being able to compare to what you had, or see what other programs or settings were on your system vs his, you can't really say what exactly it was. All I know is that you're running 4gb which is lower than the recommended. There could be something more, but that's the most glaring issue I can see.

Also of note GTA5 is very CPU intensive so you could also see performance issues from that side of the house, but I'm really just eyeballing that ram.

On another note, your graphics card also has the same system as far as texture loading and its vram. Higher resolutions load larger texture files, which also require load times. That's why when you up the res, you see higher stutter rates.

Hi there ken22g,

Open world games could be affected by the drive's performance.

Was your previous drive failing? You can check that one as well: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
It would be a really nice idea to provide a screenshot of the SMART report. Also, if there's something wrong with it, back up the data ASAP.

Also, it would be good idea to observe Resource Monitor during the freezes. See if any of the components is heavily used.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

i know my laptop is not capable of gaming as I have said i did not but this for that, but I was pretty sure that his system can at least play that specific game when I got bored, but the fact that the lag was almost unplayable I think that i did not receive I was suppose to receive in this laptop. Note i tried playing games such as far cry primal at 30fps in 720 low, world of warship 1080 60fps low, 30fps when high. I dont know if game performance when i bought it since I just tired playing it recently but my laptop has been slightly slow since the bios update I had form windows update.

Oh i did have a driver fail before, I think it says dispaly driver crash or something... or was it not responding.... anyway I did got that report and ever since my screen sometimes flicker, I dont know if it was the cause of lag since the first time I tried this game was already laggy.
