Does the 'adjust for best performance' option in control panel do anything

I've heard that clicking the 'adjust for best performance' option in control panel makes your PC run faster, I personally haven't got a crap PC I can play BF4 and GTA V quite well at 60 FPS but I heard that you will get better fps with this ticked, what are your experiences with this option? Does it actually improve anything?

It's not so much for improving game performance as it is for improving windows performance, so windows tasks move quicker.

is that for the GUI? it only affects your desktop GUI as it will remove several graphical extras.
