First time building desktop computer, how's this build?

Reposting in the right spot this time!

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hMRkRG

I've asked on reddit's /r/buildapc, and I've asked a close friend that claims to know a thing or two about computers, and both have been helpful in making this build. At this point, I just want to know if this can be improved in any way or not while still being around the same price. I'm going to be using this for gaming mostly, and hopefully for a long time as well. My friend wants me to get 2 gpu's, geforce 970's but most everyone on reddit claimed that a single, better gpu would probably be better for me, namely the 1070 listed in this build. My budget for the computer is around the 1200 price mark that it all currently adds up to, so if any improvements can be made, Ideally they'd cost the same or less than the current setup.

If you have any input, any at all, I'd appreciate it. I need all the help I can get

Solution
Wouldn't recommend your 2nd build, Turbo. The B250M-DS3H only has one M2 slot; wouldn't want to use that for a SATA M2 device like the MX300. The ASROCK boards that have two M2 Slots and an extra PCIe x16(4 lanes) would have been the better pick for that M2 scenario.

That Gskill Ripjaws 4 is just false pricing by PCPP; actual price just updated (thought that it was $90 a few hours earlier and then saw actual price at $100+ upon clicking on Newegg link). The white Ripjaws V 2400 would have been the better pick ($96.99 sales price ending in 3 days).

@OP:
650W are overkill. 550W are more than enough
Your board can only support ram with 2400MHz. So if the 3000MHz Ram isn't cheaper, get the 2400MHz.
You can get a very decent 1070 like the EVGA FTW or the Gigabyte G1 for just below 400$ which will perform exactly the same as the ASUS. Unless you got some weird preference you're willing to spend 35$ on, no need to overspend there.
Wouldn't downgrade the PSU to anything below the quality of a Seasonic G. That being said the EVGA G3 might just be one of the 4 best PSUs available.

It's a very good build, but the RAM is way overpriced by more than $30. There are a few other areas that you could save money

Agreed, that's better. It leaves room to step up to the 525GB model MX300 SSD.

Just a couple quick questions, why the smaller case, would that be better for this build or is it just because its cheaper? Does the cheaper RAM potentially affect performance/longevity, or was I simply paying more for the same thing as seems to be the case with the gpu? What are the pros and cons of the motherboard and SSD you picked over the list I posted?

What are any downsides to getting an SSD along the lines of what you've mentioned? Are they slower or made of worse materials or something? Or are SSD's in that range generally that cheap and the higher price ones are the same for a better name brand kind of thing? I don't know much about them, and only relatively recently added one to my builds

How can I tell what PSU's are good to get? I've done searches and can't find much information in that area other than the power efficiency and comments about materials used in making it, or specific brand names like EVGA or Seasonic

So the brand and things like that don't matter much? I only ask because, looking at SSD's, there are plenty of 500GB ones with various brands in that price range you mentioned, and some by brands like Corsair, Samsung, or Intel that are upwards of $300 for the same space, which is quite a price gap if there's not much difference

Thanks! Learning so much about SSD's the last couple days, but I'd never heard that rule before. Anything else I should know before buying one?

Not yet but I'll take note and watch them. I haven't actually seen much on the assembly stage, I'm still making sure all the parts I pick out are just right before I get mixed up in building it too.

Refer to Toms recent test/review of the cheap end of SSD and avoid them.
