I recently had a very unpleasant experience involving my computer failing to post while my motherboard sounded the alarm to let the whole house know something was wrong. I found the problem to be one of the two 4gb sticks of RAM that had come with my original desktop computer and promptly ordered a new set of 2x4gb sticks. My question is, is it worth it to use the extra stick alongside the dual-channel ones? I am just paranoid about it slowing down the other two sticks out of my lack of education in this area. My motherboard is an Intel DX79TAO if that is needed. I'm also pretty sure the extra stick runs a lower clock speed.

Typical more is better, and slightly slower ram speeds do not have that big of real life effect on speed.

That board supports 4 channel memory, means you can have one dimm per memory path to the cpu=fast, but you need to follow the Intel guidelines for memory as outlined in the manual, because there are a few configurations that will work and make the most of the memory you have.
