When i plug my external hard drive into any computer (pc or mac) it will boot up normally, i can access the files etc but after a couple minutes it disappears from the system like it was unplugged. the drive itself is still running the light it on and i can feel it spinning. if i am playing a video or have a file open it stop's working with no warning. I'm hoping that it might be the cable?? thanks in advance

Yeah, it does sound like this is a connection related issue. It would be nice to attach the drive with another USB cable. Does it require a power cable as well?
In case the issue persists, my suggestion would be to try to transfer the most important data stored on it.
If the device is under warranty, you can contact the place you got it from or the manufacturer's Support and eventually RMA it.

You can try and uninstall and reinstall drivers for USB ports in device manager.
UNINSTALL ALL USB related ENTRIES IN DEVICE MANAGER .
1. Click begin
2. Right click 'Computer' and choose 'Properties'
3. On the hand facet, click 'Device Manager'
4. Expand the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' class
5. Right click and uninstall ALL entries listed
6. Restart your laptop and check if it works.
I would counsel you to go to your Manufacturer's website and try to install latest drivers for chipset. confirm you put in it in compatibility mode as there are not any sixty four bit drivers free for your Windows.
