ok so i have the chance to snag an old Pentium 4 laptop for about 10 dollars heres the specs

3.2-GHz desktop Pentium 4,
1,024MB DDR RAM,
250GB 7,200-rpm hard drive,
128MB ATI Radeon 9700,
Dell TrueMobile 802.11g wireless,
DVD+RW drive;
four USB 2.0 ports,
one FireWire port,
15.4-inch LCD WUXGA, Windows XP Home Edition

now i know this is an old laptop but i like to repurpose older tech and im wondering how well this laptop will play AVI & MP4 video files was thinking of using this laptop to watch AVI and MP4 video files off the hard drive while laying in bed i have bad eyes so watching movies on my desktop is not an option

edit not sure if the videos are in HD format i.e. 720p or 1080p but consider the videos in HD just incase will they still play on this old laptop?

Solution
I have a Pentium 4 HT 3.40 Ghz (socket 478) which is able to play very well AVI and MP4 videos from local hard disks up to 720p with low GPU acceleration (my graphic card is a weak ATI Radeon 9600 Pro).
In case of HD videos I'm not sure it will work without hiccups, the P4 could handle them with the proper help of a video card, sadly that ATI 9700 never knew HD videos so it won't be able to help managing the decoders needed for that kind of videos.

I have a weaker gpu in my old laptop, x1250, that plays 1080p just fine but the cpu is better, a turion x2. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html It's 2 tiers below the 9700 and also still have my old x1550 which is the same tier and that was fine as well but again, core 2 era. I've seen p4 play 720p depending on the source with no gpu acceleration. It's not worth $10 though. People give those out for free to the trashman. You might be able to find core 2 duos laptops for that price.
