New Build - Keep Old GPU for Now

Hi all,

I'm going to be building a new system in the next month, perhaps based around Ryzen or the latest Intel CPU's.

I currently have a GTX 780Ti on my system - I want to wait to find out how the AMD GPU's perform and certainly against a 1080Ti before buying a new GPU - so my question is can I build my new system and for the time being use the 780Ti in it until I go for my choice of GPU?

I would normally wait to get all the pieces together but will be moving overseas around the time the GPU's are likely to be available so will need to get that in separately and subject to higher import taxes.

Many thanks

James

Thank you - not sure why I thought it may be an issue. Compatibility issues perhaps between older/newer generation gear? It's been a good few years since I last built a computer!

You'll be fine using that older GPU in the new build.

I'll be moving to Iceland where import fees/taxes/costs are ridiculous, as are the prices locally for components. Hence trying to get as much built here in Hong Kong (no import fees/taxes/costs and lower prices) before I go! May have to stomach a new GPU cost once there...

Thanks again

Smart decision on buying all you can now before the move. I would also recommend taking your build apart and safely packing up the components before the move. I would at least remove the CPU cooler and GPU, as those are heavy components that could possibly damage your motherboard during shipping if the package were to be handled carelessly. Just something for you to consider.

Best of luck and you're welcome!

Yeah I was thinking of doing that to be honest. Or perhaps take the components and build out there.

You should at least put everything together to make sure all is working properly before leaving. Just something else for you to consider. :pt1cable:

Well the main consideration I have is to just go for a 7700K set up or wait for Ryzen and get an 8 core beast - it's a real dilemma for me. My main computer usage is actually for flight simulation and some gaming - I don't know if less cores at a higher clock will be best (Intel) or more cores (AMD). I'll get the best GPU I can later but for now the CPU/Motherboard choice is the main one.

Best to check the system requirements for each game you will be playing. Intel is also supposedly going to release new CPUs later this year as well, named Coffee Lake. Any of the new Intel or AMD CPUs would do just fine for gaming. If you plan to do any type of video or audio editing, having more cores would be beneficial for that. Decisions, decisions. :)

That's the problem isn't it? If I don't at some point pull the trigger, I'll be waiting for Quantum Computers in 2025!

I'll need to check out what I need to make the most of Flight Simulation - I think it's single core performance to be honest. I do quite a lot of photography editing so more cores would be handy. As you say, decision! I'm leaning towards AMD right now unless the actual performance is not what's being leaked!

LOL Yeah, I am guilty of waiting and waiting and waiting, myself. If you're not in a big hurry to build, waiting would be the best decision, I suppose. We should know a lot more about the new CPUs in the coming weeks. Same with the 1080Ti, or what ever it will be called. Don't rush and build something. Take your time and plan your build around the programs and games you will be using, of course. Get it right the first time and be happy.

Well I wasn't in a big hurry to build c. 2 month time-frame with my move. But I've messed up my current system by trying to improve cooling with new Thermal Paste - CPU issues and RAM missing (see my other threads) - therefore I am basically on a low clock speed computer making it last for a couple of more weeks until Ryzen comes out! Also need the computer to order the new parts.
