Hi, my 500gb WD external harddrive is corrupted and containing alot of important files.
Whenever i try to access a folder or file on the harddrive windows explorer stops responding and the only way to get the explorer running again is by removing the harddrive. This problem appeared litteraly out of nowhere.

I have tried:

- a couple of recovery programs but then even the programs get stuck when i try to scan the harddrive.
- using a different computer (+Safe Mode)
- chkdsk /r says it has bad sectors but then an error just appears before even fixing anything
- Scanned for virus but even the virus scanner gets stuck

So if anyone have got any ideas i would really appriciate it.

Solution
If the heads are crashing, the more you power it on, the worse it will get. Cloning with hddsuperclone will likely be the easiest on the drive.

As for professional services, you may benefit from student discounts and exchange ratess, depending where you are located and which lab you use.

A few labs I suggest are https://www.recoveryforce.com/ , https://www.data-medics.com, http://www.pcimage.co.uk

Good luck!

The hard drive is failing. Running chkdsk OT any other repair programs will likely make things worse. If you are lucky, your data may be still recoverable by a data recovery professional for around $300USD.

If you are determined to go at it yourself and understand that you are risking making it a lot worse, I suggest you first try to clone the drive. I suggest hddsuperclone or ddrescue, both free Linux programs designed to handle drives with bad sectors.

If I try to clone it, could it make things worse? Should I contact a professional instead? Im a student so $300 dollars is a huge amount.

Thanks for the help!
I guess i will just have some professionals look at it instead of me trying, safer that way.
