Maximize graphics card memory

Hello,
I have some questions about my laptop. When I bought my laptop in system specs there was written that I have 5gb of video card memory. But when I checked my computer specs with DirectX Diagnostic Tool it shows that I have 8gb of video card memory.
Is that some sort of glitch?
Is it the max memory that I can get by overclocking my video card? (Is that even possible?)
How can I know if my computer is using all of that memory or if it is using only 5gb as said in the computer specs when I bought it?
And if it isn't using all of the capable memory can I max it out?
I'm sorry for any grammar mistakes I have made. I'm not the best at english lessons.

Solution
DX diag is very inaccurate as it also calculates aperture size into the vram rather than just dedicated vram. Use something like GPU-Z or Speccy to get more accurate information on dedicated vram.

Hey there.
The amount of memory your GPU has is fixed, and it cannot be changed.
As for 5GB or 8GB of VRAM, the 5GB is a weird number and the 8GB is for a really high end GPU. Since you haven't told us which laptop you have, I can't say if it should be 8GB or not!
I imagine what is going on here is that the GPU is actually an APU of some kind which uses system memory (normal RAM), and the 5GB is the maximum it is possible to use while the 8GB is actually just all of the RAM in the laptop.

bignastyid, that is a very good point!
Other ways to get the same result can include benchmarking and stress testing software like Furmark, OCCT and so on...
It seems they contain tools to monitor your computer while you run the stress test.
The best option is usually GPU-Z though.

Ok thank you. I will check my specs on GPU-Z and Speccy.

So I used GPU-Z as you recommended and it show me that my laptop has 4gb VRAM. Thank you for your time. Still I have no idea why DXDIAG showed me that my VRAM is 8gb. Could 8gb be my max memory that I can get by overclocking my VRAM?

You can't get more VRAM by overclocking it.
THis is because VRAM is a physical amount of memory on the GPU and can not be changed.
You can overclock VRAM so it runs faster but you cannot increase the amount on the graphics card.
