Hi all,

I have a self bullt PC, with USB 3.0 ports. But the speed is very slow at 5.5MB/s.

I have just installed the MSI USB Speed Up app and updated the BIOS to latest version, but no improvement.

I tried the stick in different slots, no improvement.

Kingston 16GB G4 data traveler, and the data is copied from my internal HDD, which is a WD Red 3TB, connected via SATA 6Gb/s

Any ideas to speed this up? Or buy a faster flash drive?

Solution

Wow so Sequential Read/Write that is kinda pathetic. Based on what TMTOWTSAC said we could pretty much narrow it down to being a really slow Thumbdrive. Basically a slow drive that has a "USB 3.0" Controller that only benefits read speeds apparently based on the reviews (stated reads near and slightly above 100MB/s).

For a good fast drive I'd try for something like the Sandisk Extreme drives (a good affordable fast USB 3.0 drive) or if you want to stick with kingston their HyperX series of Thumbdrives.

What type of Data are you transferring. The size of the files will affect how fast the files transfer from your HDD to the Flash drive. For instance if I transferred a bunch of small text files from my HDD to my USB 3 flash drive I can expect to get somewhere between 1-10MB/s due to the size of the files. If I transferred large video files I could expect to get 70-120MB/s. I would make sure to run a few tests on different files especially large ones to ensure your HDD is not the issue here.

Have you tried any other USB 3.0 devices to see if they reach full speed? Kingston rates that thumb drive as having "Standard" speed which doesn't mean anything. I took a glance through Amazon's comments and a ton of people complained about the write speed, though they reported anywhere from 8 MB/s to 19.2 MB/s. Kingston reps basically said "We sell faster drives!" after every complaint.
