Added an SSD to the optical drive of an Acer Aspire 5560 and it won't boot. Black screen.

The SSD is tested and working in another laptop's optical drive. The optical drive works fine for a DVD player and the computer runs smoothly when the SSD is not in the optical drive. The SSD is formatted to FAT32. I just get a black screen with lights showing that it's on and charging. I have not replaced the hard drive with the SSD in this laptop because it has no OS. Is this a formatting issue or an electrical issue? Or something else?

Update: Not an external drive. I'm using an optical drive caddy with an SSD in it http://www.ebay.ca/itm/like/291996219705. I already have one working on another laptop. Don't need an OS as it's only for storage.

Ok well yes you've both read it wrong.

You take out the optical drive, pop in a caddy with the SSD/HDD in it and you now have yourself two hardrives or an SSD/HDD combo. I'm currently using 1tb HDD and 120gb SD on my acer v3-571 but the 5560 just gives me a black screen. It's not an external drive. There is no OS because the HDD has Windows 7 on it.

Not the best way to ask for help.

Yeah I see how it would be confusing. I'll have to try and reformat it to see how that goes. Thanks.

I still can't even get to the BIOS. This is really strange. I'll see what other tinkering I can try. Again, I'm not trying to boot an os from the ssd, I'm just trying to boot from the existing hard drive and use the ssd as storage.

No luck when changing the format type. I'm going to try to switch the ssd with the hdd but that's kind of a last ditch effort. Any other ideas?

Didn't work. Still the same black screen.

I saw a post where a 5560g had a black screen doing the same thing because the BIOS needed to be updated. I'm going to have to figure out how to flash BIOS properly then try that. I really can't afford to screw up this computer!!

I flashed the new 1.15 version of the BIOS, still had a black screen but what I did is started the computer then once I saw the windows symbol I popped in the SSD. It recognizes it so that's an OK workaround but does anyone know of any other ideas I should try? I'm assuming when I restart this computer it'll just hang on the black screen indefinitely.

Anyone? Any other ideas? Like I said it seems to work if I turn on the computer then insert the SSD, but I wouldn't want to have to carry around a screwdriver to take out the optical drive any time I needed to restart it.
