Good morning/afternoon/evening

I just bought the Witcher 3 and I am starting to notice a troubling trend with high cpu temperatures. This is the first time playing a game that I have had a high cpu temperature warning (over 80 C). Is there a possible fix? I would also like some advice from the community to either upgrade my current pc, or go a different route altogether.
My core specs are as below;
intel Core i7 i7-3930K 3.20 GHz Processor - Socket R LGA-2011 - Hexa-core - 12 MB Cache
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo Fan for LGA2011
Asus P9X79 PRO Desktop Motherboard
Asus Video Card GTX680-2GD5 GTX680 2GB 2048MB DDR5 256Bit
Seasonic Power Supply X850 Active PFC 100-240V ATX +12V GOLD Modular 850W 80PLU

Thank you very much for your time,
Nikola

Oh, that pc is good for years yet, it'll have both enough cores for any game with HT enabled, and with a decent OC it'll have more than enough IPC to keep up with anything current.

As far as upkeep goes, I assumed since it is still an expensive pc comparatively, that you were doing that on a regular basis. Yes, regular maintenance and dusting for sure will keep your pc running smoothly.

As for coolers, a lot depends on where you want to go, if you are looking to keep good temps with all cores at 4.0GHz plus, you'll need something beefier than a hyper212. Many skip air coolers as the backside tends to cover the back 4 ram slots, so go with an aio or straight up custom loop. It is a 2011 after all. But then much also depends on your...

Witcher 3 is a heavy cpu usage game that can use multiple cores, more than 4, easily. It's probably taxing the cpu more than your previous games. The hyper212 is a good budget cooler, but it's still just a budget cooler and might not handle the TDP your i7 is capable of.

Thank you kindly for your response, I was afraid of that haha. Would you recommend me to further upgrade this pc? Or should i focus on buying another one because the chipset is kind of old. Should I also try and do some sort of cleaning/upkeep on the cpu like cleaning it well and applying more thermal paste? Any coolers you could recommend for me? Money is no object for me, would like to keep this pc going for another year or so . Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks!
Nikola

Most of those older cases don't fit the 280mm rads, basically just the 240mm. I love my nzxt Kraken X61, it keeps excellent temps on my i7-3770k, even at 4.9GHz across all 8 threads it only reached 74° C at 100% load testing. Many though, have a preference for air coolers, and my favorite there is the Noctua NH-D14, which while it won't stay up with the 280mm rads at extreme punishment levels, it comes pretty close. Something like the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 is also very good, and also very quiet. I'm not a big fan of the Corsair aios, although they do work well, especially the h105, H110 etc, but they have lousy fans, very high rpm ranges which makes for miserably loud coolers and the minimum speeds are a joke. I can turn down at idle my stock nzxt fans to @400rpm,thays below whisper silent, the Corsair's stop at @1800rpm which is enough noise to drown out a conversation.

The only component that might be due for an update would be the gpu, the 680 is no slouch, but games nowadays are capable of seriously testing its limits. A gtx1070 will not only be quieter, but effortlessly handles the vast majority of games at any setting.
