I'm planning on building a pretty wild PC, power draw would be around ~900W. I'm wondering if it's worth the headroom to buy a refurbished 1500i for the same price as a brand new 1200i. Thanks!

I would say 1200 as well, though the 1500 refurbished is at factory quality inspection and working capability as a new one, 90% of refurbished units (worked for Samsung for 10 years in production quality control) are DOA unit returned from stores, they are torn down, repaired, re tested, re packaged, sold with original warranty for unit as new unit, but because of rework forced by law to sell as refurbished price.

If your PC isn't going to use 1,2 kW of power or similar then go with AX1200i. 300W of headroom is more than enough.

With refurbished PSU, you can't tell on how long it has been in service and what loads it had to endure. Also, can you tell if you get any warranty with the refurbished PSU?
