Hello

I'd like to ask for some advice here as I'm facing a dilemma. I have 2 entry level systems, and I'm currently using the #1 PC to work and play some games. PC #2 isn't being used. Their specs are as follows:

#1
Pentium G4400 (LGA 1151)
Mini ITX motherboard with the H110 chipset
2x4 GB DDR4 RAM
Thermaltake Core V1 case

#2
Pentium G850 (LGA 1155)
mATX motherboard with the H61 chipset
12 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM (1x4 + 1x8 sticks)
Thermaltake V3 case

Other parts:
2x3.5" HDDs
1 SSD
GTX 750 Ti

I was considering an upgrade to a Core I3 7100, but was also thinking that I'd need one more HDD and my current case wouldn't allow me to keep all 3x3.5" drives. That being the situation, I thought about the following: instead of upgrading my G4400 to an i3 7100, I could upgrade my old G850 to an i5 3570 or an i7 3770. The i7 would cost me 30% more than the i3 7100, while the i5 would cost the same, if not a bit cheaper. My intent with this would be to make the most of the 1155 platform I already own, allowing it to last a couple more years, while still being a significant upgrade from my Pentium G4400 CPU. If I went this route my current 1151 PC would be passed to my wife as her "backup" PC, as her notebook isn't as capable as it was in 2011.

What would you do in the same situation? Are older i5 and i7 models powerful enough to compete with higher tier i3s and entry level i5s?

Any help is appreciatted

I see now the G4560 is listed as "coming soon". They must have sold out because they were available a couple weeks ago.

Anyways, if you did go with an i5 3570 or i7 3770 they would be plenty fast enough to power a GTX 1050 Ti or RX 470.

Looks like the i5-3570 is actually quite a bit faster than the G4560 and they're probably around the same price if you buy the i5 used, maybe a little more expensive. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G4560-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570/3892vsm793

Hi MrN1ce9uy

Actually I was considering to upgrade before the G4560 hits the market (that's why I chose the i3 7100), because I think I'd have more chances of selling my G4400 for a reasonable price if that CPU weren't around.

I'm leaning towards the i5 3570/i7 3770 solution, but I'm worried about their performance. Are they still good CPUs, in comparison to more modern ones? I'd like them to last 2 more years I guess, and meanwhile I'd upgrade my GPU to a 1050 Ti or RX 470. I don't game that much so I can't justify the investment on a 1060 or more expensive GPUs.

Sorry for the late reply. Thought I had responded, didn't notice I'd lost the post after logging in from my phone. I guess I'll wait to see if the G4560 becomes available here where I live, in Brazil. I honestly don't have hopes of seeing it in the market, since it's price/performance ratio is so good it would kill i3 sales for much cheaper. For the time being I guess I'll just add a SSD and give the 1155 to my wife, and hope that, if G4560 ends up hitting the BR market, it doesn't make more powerful CPUs more expensive. The performance of my G4400 is pretty OK too, so for now I guess I'll focus on upgrading my GPU and Storage.

Thanks a lot MrN1ce9uy
